The latest release: Population in Brief 2026

This page is a dated snapshot of the latest releases and does not forecast.

Population in Brief 2026 was released on 25 September 2026 by the National Population and Talent Division. The reference period for the population figures is as at June 2026. The publication's source is stated as the Department of Statistics and the Immigration & Checkpoints Authority.

As at June 2026, the citizen population was 3.68 million (3,684.9 thousand, up 0.7% from 3.66 million in June 2025). The Permanent Resident population was 0.55 million (546.6 thousand), relatively stable. The resident population, citizens and PRs together, was 4,231.5 thousand (4.23 million). The non-resident population was 1.98 million (1,977.0 thousand), up 3.7% from June 2025.

Why the total grew

The release states the increase in total population was mainly due to growth in the non-resident population, particularly an increase in Work Permit Holders in the Construction sector to support key projects such as Changi Terminal 5, Marina Bay Sands expansion, and the ramp up of housing supply and other transport infrastructure.

SingStat's Population Trends, 2026 (published 25 Sep 2026) states the resident population grew by 0.6% to 4.23 million between end-June 2025 and end-June 2026.

The Population in Brief 2026 Key Indicators table gives the reference period as at June of the year for population data, and notes that figures may not sum up due to rounding.

Who counts as a resident

Only residents are counted in the household figures later on this page.

SingStat defines a resident household as a household where the household reference person is a Singapore citizen or permanent resident. Population in Brief 2026 counts residents as citizens plus Permanent Residents, and reports non-residents separately.

Resident households

SingStat's General Household Survey 2025 (published 30 Jun 2026) puts the number of resident households at 1,487.1 thousand (1.49 million) in 2025, up 1.6% from 1,463.4 thousand in 2024.

Data on resident households are based on annual household surveys, namely the Census of Population, General Household Survey, and Comprehensive Labour Force Survey. The household count is for 2025, not June 2026.

The average household size of resident households was 3.06 persons in 2025, compared with 3.09 in 2024 and 3.39 in 2015.

According to SingStat's Population Trends, 2026, one-person households rose from 11.9% in 2015 to 16.7% in 2025, while the share of married couple-based households with children declined from 56.5% to 47.6% over the same period.

Where residents live

In 2025, 77.2% of resident households lived in HDB dwellings (1- and 2-room flats 7.3%, 3-room 16.6%, 4-room 31.2%, 5-room and Executive 22.1%), 17.9% in condominiums and other apartments, and 4.7% in landed properties. 91.2% of resident households were owner-occupied.

SingStat's Population Trends, 2026 states that an estimated 3.20 million residents, or approximately three in four, resided in HDB flats.

The age profile of residents

Residents are the group most housing rules are written around, so their age profile matters for this page. SingStat prints the residents in three age bands.

SingStat's Singapore Residents age structure as at 2026: below 20 years, 774.0 thousand (down 1.2% from 783.3 thousand in 2025); 20-64 years, 2,632.2 thousand (0.0% change from 2,631.6 thousand); 65 years and over, 825.3 thousand (up 4.5% from 789.6 thousand).

SingStat's Population Trends, 2026 states the resident population continued to age: the median age rose to 43.6 years, and the proportion of residents aged 65 years and over rose to 19.5% in 2026 from 12.4% in 2016.

SingStat's Latest Data table gives the Old Age Support Ratio, the number of residents aged 20-64 per resident aged 65 years and over, as 3.2 in 2026 against 3.3 in 2025, and the proportion of the citizen population aged 65 years and over as 21.4% in 2026 against 20.7% in 2025.

The age bands describe residents only, not the non-resident population.

Smaller sub-groups the releases print

SingStat's Population Trends, 2026 states that more than half (51.7%) of the 4.23 million residents resided in nine of the fifty-five planning areas, and that Tampines was the most populous planning area, with 296,060 residents.

SingStat's Population Trends, 2026 states that Tengah, Punggol and Tampines had the highest proportion of residents aged below 5 years old, while Outram, Ang Mo Kio, Jurong East, Bukit Merah and Rochor were among the planning areas with the highest proportions of residents aged 65 years and over.

These figures are about where residents live and how old they are. They are not a statement about demand for any type of home.

How often each release comes out

Two SingStat releases supply most of the figures on this page, and they run on different cycles.

SingStat lists Population Trends, 2026 with frequency Annual.

SingStat's Population and Population Structure page lists the General Household Survey 2025 as a news item of 30 Jun 2026.

Because the survey and the population count have different reference dates, the household figures on this page are for 2025 while the population figures are for June 2026.

What this page does not cover

This page reports what the official releases state. It does not forecast the population, and it does not say what population figures mean for property prices or rents. Population in Brief is an annual publication, and SingStat's Population Trends is an annual report (the twenty-second edition is the 2026 one). Each release gives a new set of figures.
